The Buried Life

What Do You Want To Do Before You Die?

Recently I have been debating again about getting my terminal degree in Information Technology or Computer Science proper. I abandoned my master's in Information Security years ago for an MBA because of a revelation i made one night. I was either reading a book or watching one of the Voyager episodes when I realized something. In the future on Star Trek they have all sorts of experts from xeno-biologists to Warp-Core theorists to Photon torpedo whatever etc... But they never have computer scientists. In fact in all the Star Trek TV series and books i have only really encountered one character who was a computer scientist and he was a "genius" developer.

Now why the lack of computer engineers I believe is a reflection of our own world. In the Star Trek world almost every job requires interfacing with a computer so everyone is in some way is a compute expert. The same I believe holds true for our societies. I once applied for a PhD program in Political Science but i was denied. Why? Because i didn't know enough about Artificial Intelligence programming, and that was 9 years ago it is even worst now.

I believe that there are 2 areas where degrees are really not so important you need the ability more:

1. Languages (literature is different)
2. Information Technology (computer science properly is a little different)

So I guess I will not bother with any more degrees unless it's something like different like Sociology, so I can travel the world and research Topless Cultural Rituals or something like that.
