Finish all the goals on Nathan's list

My story - stickin' to it.

So, I started my list when I was 15 - 2002, I think? I wish I had a more romantic story to explain when/how I started it, but here it is: I was singing a song at church and had a cold or vocal issue of some sort, and I said (here it is- big moment, guys) "I sound like a dying cow". And then, I realized, I've never even heard a dying cow. I figured I ought to do that at some point, so I wrote it down. I kept writing down things I wanted to do as I thought of them and started showing it around to some friends. It was a fledgling idea at that point, but it kept growing.

On a missions trip down to Juarez, Mexico, I decided to entertain the 14 other people with me in the 15-passenger van with a rowdy round of life-goal sharing. One of the people in the van with me was Nathan Bell, a high school friend. I didn't know it until much later, but Nathan started his own list of things he wanted to do before he died.

In the summer of 2005, Nathan went on a backpacking trip with our church youth group. He'd been feeling ill throughout the trip; the leaders thought that he was suffering from altitude sickness. On the last day of the trip, Nathan collapsed and, although all possible efforts were made to revive him, didn't make it. By the time the paramedics made it back up the hill, he was already gone.

At his funeral, I heard for the first time that Nathan had created a list of his own. The goal mentioned from Nathan's list was "to outlive my parents (not out of spite, just to save them from any grief)". The fact that this, of all things, would make it onto a 17-year-olds life goal list testifies to Nathan's character. It's continually heartbreaking that he wasn't able to accomplish it.

I asked Nathan's younger brother to send me his list and made it my own goal to accomplish the ones that Nathan didn't have the time to complete. Together, there are 291 goals on our lists - I've completed around 50, I believe. I'm in it for the long run, though, both for Nathan and for myself.

In addition to that, if there are any goals on Nathan's list that you think you can accomplish in his name, please let me know. It's not about ME doing these goals, it's about keeping Nathan's memory alive and honoring the person that he was. I would truly love any help or support you could direct my way.

Nathan's #23 - Go White Water Rafting - done!

So at my internship last semester, I worked a lot with veteran students - some hardcore guys that served their time in the military and came back to CSU to get their degrees. They planned a summer trip to go whitewater rafting, so we went last Saturday and it was suh-weet! We've been getting so much rain in Colorado lately that the river was flowing crazy high - by the time we got done, it had risen to the point that they shut it down for commercial tours. Our guide was telling us that it was ab… Continue

#78 - Eat absolutely nothing but ramen for a week.

Ruh-roh. I'm not entirely sure why I added this goal in the beginning, but it's there so I've got to get it done eventually. This week offered a good opportunity, as I have no money and no plans to head out of town, so today is the start date of a week-long saga into the world of sodium-packed noodles. Breakfast and lunch have been pretty painless - I'll update later on in the week, though. Wish me luck and low blood pressure!

6-9 - Day 3
Update:
I was obviously out of my mind yesterday and for… Continue

Solve a Mystery and Be Serenaded - done and done!

I met with my friend Ben last night so I could meet with "the informant" to get some information on the whereabouts of my missing patio table. We geared up for detecting (meaning we put our trench coats on), then I was blindfolded, driven to an unknown location, and led by hand to the middle of...somewhere. While I waited, Ben transformed into Tony, the owner of Tony's Italian Restaurant (meaning Ben took off his trench coat and started speaking in an Italian accent). Tony led me to a bridge goi… Continue

The Case of the Missing Table...#75: Solve a Mystery

So, I returned home from a road trip on Tuesday night, only to find this note on my bed:

I called a friend, got together my detective gear (a trench coat, a magic 8 ball, a sewing kit, and a headlamp) and did some investigating. We checked the crime scene for clues and found nothin… Continue
